At eight months pregnant, Debbie Fan says her lower back aches. So Fan looks forward each month to getting a two-hour prenatal massage, which she says relieves her back pain. "I had neck and back pain problems before, but after I found out I was pregnant, they really got worse." she said. "These massages have helped a lot."
The owner of Back to Basics Massage in Quincy, said she suggests pregnant women who experience pain or those who just want to relax, get prenatal massages once a month. The owner said many of her clients come more often, even weekly.
Women, especially those with high-risk pregnancies should check with their doctors before receiving a massage to make sure it's OK. And it is important to get prenatal massages from a trained, experienced therapist. There are certain pressure points on the hands, feet, and ankles that need to be avoided because it is believed they could induce labor.
Massage therapists say they go easy on pregnant women. First they assess the expectant mother's needs. With the body changes that come with pregnancy, women often have pain in their hips, pelvic area, lower back and legs, so massage therapists work on specific areas that cause pain, and they do it in a much more gentle way than they would in a regular deep tissue massage.
"It's a more focused massage," the owner said. "Most expectant mothers will have specific areas they would like massaged. A lot of them would like us to incorporate footwork, facial, head and temple massage. We massage in a lighter way because the body is more sensititive when you're pregnant." The massage also includes techniques to relax and calm a pregnant woman's nerves, she said. "We do long, flowy relaxation strokes, typcially on the back, the head, the neck, the face and arms and legs. It's a good endorphin release."
Pregnant women use a "Preggo Pillow," a large cushion with a hole cut out that allows women to lie on their stomachs while the cushion cradles their pregnant bellies.
Fan has been receiving prenatal massages from Back to Basics Massage since her second month of pregnancy. At that time, she talked to her doctor and chiropractor about how to relieve her migraine headaches and neck pain, and they both suggested she try prenatal massages. "The massages helped a lot." Fan said. "My migraines are gone."

06/15/2007 best massage ive ever gotten: the girls at back to basics massage gives the greatest massage!! there are about 10-12 therapist there and they all have different but great techinques and styles.. each time i leave im satisfied with my treatment especially with affordable price, friendly staff, compliementary refreshments everytime, a quiet comfortable place that makes both a man and a woman feel comfortable walkin into and most of all the massage itself is unexplainable. oh and everyone gets a bag of green tea to take home to help release all the toxins from the massage which really helps. there's really nothing to complain about this place. ive gotten massages for manny years and back to basics massage by far as got to be boston's greatest. the girls there are awesome!! you should check it out. i highly recommend yvette linda melissa and andie for massages!! these girls defintely know what they're doing. check them out. it doesnt hurt to try!! u wont regret it... they're so professional wit what they do u'll be guaranteed to leave back to basics feeling like a new person. they focus on whatever it is that u want worked on. they dig in wit the right amount of pressure releasing every knot and tightness in the body. it feels great!

Best Value + Great Freebies = Great Massage: I have persistent upper back pain so I tend to try out a lot of massage places. This has the best value....you get leather massaging chairs and foot massager while you wait and to top it off you get to customize your massage room/table. And by this I mean, you get to choose heated or not heated table....oil/scent for the room amongst other things. The therapist worked out all the knots in my back using amble pressure and precise accuracy. I can't wait to go back again!
5 out of 5 Rating 03/07/2007 This is a fantastic place for a massage!!!: I've been to many massage places, and this is by far the BEST! Not only do they give the best massages, but they have the best prices, too! You will truly enjoy a visit here and will consider it money well spent. I'm happy to recommend this place to anyone! Can't wait for my next appointment!

5 out of 5 Rating by Jeannie 05/10/2006 Tremendous Massages by Great skilled therapists: I wouln't go anywhere else for my deep tissue massages. I tried most of their therapists & all of them have always given a superb deep tissue massage, unlike a lot of other places that give a fluffy light massage, even when you ask. They first warm up your muscles with this great thermal heating pad & then don't waste anytime getting deep into your knots. I've always received at least 65 minutes, if not more, for a 1 hour massage. (Most other places only give 50 minutes.) They're always professional, courteous & eager to help with specific therapeutic issues. I would highly recommend this fine, enjoyable establishment to anyone!
5 out of 5 Rating 08/04/2005 Best, Professional, relaxing place ever!: We've had several treatments at Back To Basics, and my sister and I have always had the best experiences there. Experiencing several of their professional, experienced, therapists, we've enjoyed great Deep tissue massages, reflexology, earconing, and 2 hour Foot care therapy sessions, like no other! Complimentary aromatherapy( w/every tx.), refreshments, paraffin hand treatments, referral gifts, sea salt scrubs, and sample packs, are just some of the extra things we've gotten for free, every time we've visited. This is by far, the South Shore's best kept secret, for a healing facility. And the prices are so affordable. I would highly reccommend this place to anyone looking for a therapeutic environment. They're truly the best!
